Still Alice — Psychological Analysis of the Movie

The movie named ‘Still Alice’ is directed by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland, in 2014. The movie is about the life of the linguistics professor after she is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

The main character of the movie is Alice Howland who is professor of linguistics. Alice is 50 years old, she has a happy marriage and three children, and she works in a university as a professor. She is very intelligent and very successful on her job.

On the movie, it can be seen the stages of Alzheimer’s disease with the beginning of the symptoms. Alzheimer is a degenerative brain disorder which causes memory loss, motor deficits, and eventual death. The symptoms start with memory loss and then motor deficits are shown. Alzheimer’s disease causes severe degeneration on the brain areas which are hippocampus, entorhinal cortex and neocortex. On the movie, firstly, when Alice talks about her studies, she cannot remember the word ‘lexicon’, then when she goes on a walk in the university campus, suddenly she cannot remember where she is and cannot find her way. Additionally, she cannot remember the talking with her husband on some events. These experiences are primary behavioral symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease because although there is no big impact of these losses, they will increase and have a big impact on the patient’s daily life.
